In a recent post, I set out my goals for Q1 2012:
So, almost a month into Q1, how are things going? Stay tuned for the bombshell at the end!
Getting on stage 4x per week
Why? I taught a finance class in the first two weeks of January, and so that derailed my plans. I also don’t go on stage without being prepared. If I’m going to go on stage, it’s to perfect material or try out new stuff. Either way, I need at least 2-3 hours of dedicated practice backed by 2-4 hours of dedicated writing.
Now that I’m done with teaching for the next month, I’ll be on stage tonight. I’m going to be working on my:
- Broke entrepeneur and UFC in the bathroom bits
- Opening improvisation with the crowd (i.e. opening the set using a joke that relates to the previous comedians’ material) to promote audience engagement
- Comfort on stage
- Anti-jokes (jokes for when jokes don’t hit)
Hosting 5 open Mics
This seems a bit ambitious at this point, simply because I don’t have enough prepared material to interject between 7-9 comedians. That said, this is an important goal because it will give me a forum to showcase my improvisation skills.
Doing More Guest Posts
Last week, I realized that I was creating an art gallery without inviting people to come see it. By that I mean I was creating solid content without advertising it (i.e. sharing it with the world apart from Facebook and Twitter).
I recently entered a Guest Blogging contest to win $1,000.00 on MySEOCommunity. My post, ‘Comedian Attracts More Blog Visitors Using Backlinks‘ documented how I moved this blog from the 7th page of Google to the 2nd page of Google using white hat (above the board) SEO techniques for the phrase, ‘Toronto Stand-up Comedian.’
So far, the post has 18 RT’s, 4 Likes, and it also turns out there’s a few people using GooglePlus (who knew?). Was it easy? No. It took me 3-4 hours to craft that simple post. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
Getting My Fat Arse In Shape
This is how I sounded after running up 7 flights of stairs today:
BOMBSHELL: I’m Going To Be On A PAID Show
Quinn C. Martin is the host of Toronto’s Talent, RogersTV’s most highly-rated show and has even been on a Budweiser commercial. I recently did a set on the show and he liked it so much that he asked me to open for his February 19th show, ‘Two and a Half Quinn‘ which he will host and headline.
There’s one thing that I haven’t mentioned yet. Can you guess?
More material. I need 15 minutes of material ASAP. However, to get 15 minutes of material, I need to do 5 sets per week for 3 months so I can choose the good bits, get rid of the bad ones, and then perfect the good bits by testing out lines until they only contain funny (no filler). Let’s do this!!
